The main theme of the project is determined as “Factories” in the axis of the interaction of nature and people. The concepts to be examined together with the main theme are listed as life and material cycles, participatory practices, sustainability of ecosystems, reuse and recycling, ecological footprint.
The focus of the project to be carried out in Ayvalık will be wine production, which provides significant added value to the agricultural economy of the region. Functions such as research centre, museum, gastronomic activities and guest house will be added to the project in order to support the culture related to production and to create the public character of the project.
THE CONTEXT
TOUCHING THE INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
The wall remains of early Turkey’s Republican Era industrial buildings in the project site were taken as a reference, the texture and character of them were analyzed and new proposals were developed accordingly. The places where the walls collapsed were proposed to be completed with materials expressing the character of the spaces’ functions. However, the relatively strong masonry walls were preserved, and a light, partially transparent roof was designed with wooden trusses.
RESPONSE
The project proposal focuses on understanding the Ayvalık district in terms of nature and human interaction and appreciating the industrial heritage from the early Republican period of Turkey. In this context, the proposed winery aims not only to operate as a production centre but also to develop the region and add value both economically, socio-culturally and touristically.
WINERY HUB
Beside road transportation, sea transportation is also considered to ensure that the factory is easily accessible both for the people and cargo. For this reason, two piers are proposed, one in the cargo entrance area and in front of the tasting centre.
Spatial planning was carried out in a way that the production and visitor routes would be strongly connected with each other. In this way, wine production, which fairly an art, was aimed to be exhibited to the visitors in all stages. Besides the production functions; spaces such as wine tasting centre, cafes and restaurants, a pier for transportation by sea, entertainment areas were proposed and the project was aimed to be a gathering area at the same time.
